Reliable shaft sealing for rotating equipment under demanding conditions

What are carbon floating ring seals?

A carbon floating ring seal is typically made of segmented carbon rings mounted in a carrier or housing around a rotating shaft or sleeve. The ring segments form a close-running sealing interface while remaining free to ‘float’ slightly – allowing the seal to follow the shaft and maintain a consistent sealing gap.

Seal performance depends on the design (single- or multi-stage), shaft speed, pressure, temperature, medium, and the condition of the shaft or sleeve surface. Proper selection ensures an optimal balance between leakage control, wear performance, and robustness throughout the duty cycle.

Single-Stage Carbon Ring Seals

Single-stage designs are ideal where differential pressure and leakage requirements allow for a simpler seal arrangement. They are commonly chosen for auxiliary sealing tasks or moderate-duty conditions (application-dependent).

Multi-Stage / Multi-Ring Sealing Arrangements

Multi-stage designs employ multiple sealing rings to enhance leakage control under higher differential pressures. Staging also helps manage pressure drop and maintain sealing stability in more demanding applications (selection-dependent).

Special Designs for Demanding Environments

Depending on the medium and operating conditions, seals can be configured with various ring materials and grades, carriers, and secondary sealing elements. Selection takes into account corrosion risk, contamination, temperature exposure, and the required service life to ensure reliable performance in even the most challenging environments.

Typical Applications

Carbon floating ring seals are used wherever rotating shafts require reliable sealing – particularly in heavy-duty industrial machinery, where vibration, temperature fluctuations, and long operating hours demand robust and consistent sealing performance.

Need help choosing the right seal?

Share your equipment details, including shaft diameter and speed, operating pressure and temperature, and the medium to be sealed. If available, include drawings, photos, or the existing seal reference. Our experts will recommend the optimal carbon floating ring seal and guide you through the next steps.
