The fifth Sustainability Report from Klüber Lubrication

(2020) highlights the successful progress of our sustainability program, showcasing key initiatives and achievements in lubricant development.

sustainability footprint

Footprint

By “footprint,” we mean our approach to continually improve and reduce energy and resource use. This involves:

Selecting and efficiently using suitable raw materials, including renewables.

Reducing energy and resource consumption across our value-added chain.

Sustainability at our sites is just as important as helping our customers improve theirs. That’s why we aim to source 50% of our electricity from renewable energy—like wind and solar—by 2025. Step by step, we are shifting to green energy, as these examples demonstrate:

Green Energy

Our Austria production site is powered by a regional hydroelectric plant, ensuring a 100% green energy supply.

E-Mobility

We use zero-emission electric vehicles for transport between our Munich production site and our Maisach warehouse, supported by expanded charging infrastructure.

Photovoltaics

Our Mexico site harnesses solar energy through an on-site photovoltaic system, reducing CO₂ emissions by 200 tons per year.

sustainability handprint

Handprint

By “handprint,” we mean the actions we take to support sustainable value creation for our customers. Our goal is to help them achieve their sustainability objectives through our solutions and services.

Promoting sustainability ensures opportunities for future generations. Today, more than ever, sustainability in industry is a challenge for companies. The main challenge is to ensure efficiency and performance while responsibly managing environment and resources. For us, these aspects are not mutually exclusive—they can often be realized together.

Our specialty lubricants are the result of intense research and development to meet the requirements of the future. As highly engineered, innovative solutions with increased efficiency, they precisely match our customers’ needs.

Our specialty lubricants generate positive effects:

Reduce frictional resistance

Lower emissions

Save natural resources

Improve environmental compatibility

Minimize disposal and recycling costs

Extend machine service life

Reduce operating costs

With our know-how, we support customers from around 20 industries and market segments, including automotive, cement, and food-processing industries. We provide comprehensive service and advice, always considering environmental impact, security of supply, and resource conservation.

Examples of sustainable impact:

Wind power industry

Specialty lubricants extend wind turbine service life, significantly reducing production costs and improving competitiveness.

Cement industry

InterCement in Brazil reduced resource consumption and extended machine service life by using our lubricants.

Hydro lubricants

Water-based lubricants lower friction and improve workplace safety.

KlüberEnergy

Our services optimize energy efficiency of machines and plants.

Sustainability Scorecard

sustainability scorecar

To enhance the footprint and handprint across the life cycle of our products, we leverage our Sustainability Scorecard throughout product development.

The challenges of sustainable company management motivate us to create highly engineered, innovative processes and solutions for the future.

Specialty lubricants based on mineral or natural oils are not merely expendable materials. They are key components that enable dynamic machines, installations, or other systems to operate efficiently.

The design, development, or modification of our lubricants and services always includes a comprehensive analysis of all relevant processes in terms of sustainability. Our entire value-added chain is considered.

Our Sustainability Scorecard for innovations plays a central role in this process. It evaluates a product’s life cycle and intended features, assessing the entire value-added chain with respect to:

Raw materials and additives

Processing and production

Packaging

Transport

Customer benefit

Waste management

Our footprint and customer benefit are closely linked. If this balance is insufficient, product development is typically not pursued.
